Aug 11, 2011 Since dell is awesome with there support times, I was wonder if anyone knew where I could find a download for AlienFX, the program that allows you to change the colors of the keyboard etc. After recently re-installing my OS (because of a. up on dells part) I no longer have the program and it is not included in the drivers and utilities CD. The lag will be a second if the machine is idling but will be a lot longer (or it never switches) if the machine is under any kind of load such as playing a game or running a virus scan session. It sounds like a software issue with what is still a very new design so maybe they'll have a patch update available soon. System control panel software for Alienware gaming notebooks. Good evening everyone,
I recently got the oppertunity to try out the Alienware Elite gaming keyboard and mouse combo and wanted to throw up some pics and a quick write up about my experiences thus far with them.

Alienware Elite Gaming Mouse (AW958) $89
First off the packaging was really nice IMO and well thought out. It is nice to look at, feels solid and does a pretty good job of showcasing the product.
Keyboard packaging 1 and 2
Mouse packaging 1
First thing is first. The keyboard is built like a tank , just like Alienware's laptops. The finish is the same grey? silver? as the rest of their laptop/desktop lineup and looks quite nice. It is also quite heavy! I was a little surprised when I hoisted the keyboard out of the packaging to find out just how heavy it actually was compared to my older Logitech G510 which was quite a bit bigger and had more buttons. Both the keyboard and mouse have nice braided cabling to help with the esthetics but I would expect nothing less from higher end accessories like theses.
I will admit this is my first time using a mechanical keyboard so my experience with that portion of this is new but I can imediately see why these have become to go to for a lot of people. After a few minutes of typing on this keyboard I already know I can't go back to non mechanical ever again. As I can't really compare this to other mechanical keyboards I will say that the typing experience has ben wonderful and I highly recomend it if your on the fence about going to a mechanical keyboard or not.
The LED backlighting is amazing compared to other keyboards I have but I guess that shouldn't be all that surprising because my G510 is up there in age now. The keyts pop way nicer color and brightness wise compared to all my other keyboards and even next to my Alienawre 17R4 which just can't push the brightness as much as the AW768 can. The lighting zones are a nice touch but I don't see per key lighting as an option in the menu unless I am missing it. If I am missing it please someone point it out to me!
On the plus side you get many many more color options in the Alienware FX color screen now vs the laptops which have pre-determined colors you can choose from. Oh and in case anyone was wondering, YES there is white!
The Macro setup I didn't use a whole lot as I don't really use Macro's anyways but I was a little disapointed to not see an option to setup program launching , for example setting up Outlook to launch using a macro key. Maybe it is just a different setup then what I am used to in the Command Center software for the laptops? I would honestly really love to see Alienware build this into the Command Center software instead of having a seperate Control Panel software for just the keyboard and mouse.
The mouse took some getting used to for me as it has a very different grip and feel compared to all the Logitech mice I have ever owned ( been a Logitech mouse user my whole life thus far ). The mouse feels like it is too long for my tastes but I found I could adjust and get used to it if I played some games with it for more then a few minutes. My daily driver is still a Logitech G900 and I don't see giving that up any time soon. Compared to that I would still prefer the G900 any day of the week as it just fits in my hand better and is more comftorable to use. Not to say that the Alienware mouse isn't nice in and of it's own and if you already have more of a palm grip mouse you may find the switch to be seamless and not a problem at all.
The mouse looks much the same as the keyboard color wise and seems to have the same soft touch material that comes on the laptops where your palm sits and on the side panels giving it a pretty nice and silky feeling while not being slipery to the touch. The rest of the mouse is plastic and has the same silvery finsih as the keybaord.
The LED's in the mouse are configurable much the same as the keyboard
The software is the same software that comes with the keyboard, and they are both bundled together just like you would see in the Command Center software that comes with the Alienware desktops and laptops. Alienware Control Panel is not as nicely laid out as Command Center and does not look as nice as it is missing the nicely done UI but it is functional and gets the job done. The software also asks you to auto install when you first plug it in saving you the trouble of having to go to Alienware's support site to download it if that is a concern.
Edit /u/Maineiac has brought to my attention that the new Command Center software does indeed control the keyboard and mouse instead of using Control Center.
The mouse does have included weights but even with them installed I didn't feel a noticable difference but I am also not a competitive gamer and browsing Reddit is probably a poor platform for testing that :p
The mouse does scroll nice and I felt the DPI levels were sufficient for my uses, and they are adjustable for those that prefer different levels. The side panels are removable and customizable with magnetic side panels that allow for a simple forward/back combo or a more adaptable MMO feel mouse with up to 6 programmable buttons.
The scrolling wheel has a very nice feel to it but I felt I did miss the never ending scrolling feature of my Logitech G900 although I don't use it all that often so it is probably something one could learn to live without pretty easily.
The mouse also has a quick DPI switch right behind the mouse wheel that was easy to use and didn't feel like it got in the way at all allowing for DPI switching on the fly if you needed that.
Here are some pics of the mouse and keyboard that I have setup so you can see what they look like in use. Sorry for the potatoe quality, my phone does not like low light apparently.
IMO Alienware's Keyboard and mouse are a decent combo and they feel like a solid product. The price wasn't overly high for what your getting IMO compared to other offers in the same catagory and I enjoyed the feel mostly although the mouse does take some getting used to. The firmware updated on mine right out of the box and I didn't have any trouble there as the experience was quick and problem free. I think these are solid performers and are MUCH better then the previous Alienware branded peripherals I have used in the past prior to Alienware making their own products. Obviosly everyone's milage may vary with their experiences but I found these to be pleasently good and would recomend them if your in the market for new peripherals, especially if you want them to match your already existing Alienware hardware whether it be a Desktop or Laptop that is permanently stationed on your desk and you prefer not to use the laptop keyboard.
I hope this helps at least a few people out there if they were on the fence about these two devices. Thanks for reading!
